OVERVIEW

Our 24 members started planning the event in early November 2009. We had several committees working to secure donations, engage volunteers, enlist social service providers, and organize our AmeriCorps members for the day-of-event logistics. With two of our members serving as co-leaders, we were able to provide an amazing array of services and care for the more than 400 individuals that attended the event in downtown Austin.

 GETTING THINGS DONE

Living up to MLK’s dream of serving those that need the most basic forms of care, we did the following:

·         -Engaged more than 100 volunteers from all over Austin including 2 additional AmeriCorps groups (Goodwill and Catholic Charities)

·         -Welcomed more than 400 individuals living on the street to a friendly, caring environment where they could get the help they needed

·         -Served more than 400 warm meals

·         -Distributed 900 pairs of shoes, 350 jackets, 100 backpacks, 900 pairs of socks, and 300 toiletry kits

·         -Gave more than 300 haircuts

·         -Offered foot care exams, massages, STD screenings, speech/hearing screenings, and on-site case management services for housing and medical access

·         -Entertained with spoken word poetry, a slide show on MLK’s message, and educated the public about AmeriCorps and Keep Austin Housed
